The Death of Physical Media Has Been Greatly Exaggerated
As the golden age of VHS was kind enough to rewind for the final hurrah, pre-recorded videotapes were as ubiquitous as grains of sand on a Florida beach. Local video rental shops were plentiful, although fewer in number with the advent of corporate monoliths such as Blockbuster Video, an establishment where if you wanted to take a film home for the night, literal walls lined with multiple copies of the latest releases awaited your selection.
The Card Collectors Beginners Guide Part 8: Pricing Your Collection
Welcome back to my series of Collecting Basics where I break down the hobby of card collecting piece by piece. In Part 1, we broke down what base/common cards are. Part 2 we got deep into the confusing Sp’s and variations. In Part 3 we dove into what parallels are. Part 4 I showed off inserts. In Part 5 we looked at autographs and the different varieties that exist, and in Part 6 we took a glance at memorabilia cards and their differences.

Springtime, Sunshine, Flowers and BASEBALL!
It’s been a long winter. Now spring has sprung. The seasonal change! And with this change comes the change in sports. Baseball is here! And being an older person, my thoughts go to the past and my younger day’s hobby, shared by so many others, collecting baseball cards and baseball photos.
Exploring Rochester’s Vinyl Scene: Bop Shop Part 2
In our quest to bring you the most accurate and applicable information concerning vinyl records, we reached out once again to Tom from Bop Shop Records. Tom has been in business since the very early 1980’s but has been working in the music and record industry since dirt. Well, maybe not dirt but a long time. The cold and drizzly day quickly faded as I opened the poster laden door to Bop Shop Records. “The Traveling Wilburys” (see note later) were blasting . Liz was sitting at the counter. Without hesitation I was quickly told Tom was in basement and would be right up.
Eliminate the Effects of Acid in Your Posters
Unless your paper is made from cotton rag – which is very rare due to its high cost, most of the paper that your posters are printed on are made from wood pulp. Mechanical pulping produces paper with the shortest fiber length and does not remove lignin from the wood which promotes acid hydrolysis* and causes paper deterioration over time. You can read more about 'The Deterioration and Preservation of Paper' at the Library of Congress.
Don’t Collect Then Neglect!
It’s easy to get so caught up in the process of accumulating things - after all, that’s the fun part! - that you lose sight of some of the important details that are part and parcel of maintaining a serious collection. In this post I want to cover some of the oft-neglected things that you should be doing to protect your investment and plan for the future of your collection. Some of these considerations were brought to mind recently, as in the last month both a colleague of mine, and a collector with whom I have done a good bit of business, passed away.
Disaster Films of the 1970's!
I remember once hearing film critic Roger Ebert lament that you know you’re in for a bad film when there is a row of star shots lined up at the bottom of a movie poster. Well…all of these films have that, but I can assure you that they’re not all that bad, even Ebert liked some of them. Cinema in the 1970s was going through a renaissance; embracing the styles and themes of the French New Wave and the auteur theory, (the director being the author of his work). Films were forgoing the old-school studio style of film making and the audience were loving it on pictures as diverse as EASY RIDER, THE GODFATHER, M*A*S*H, and THE LAST PICTURE SHOW (director Peter Bogdonavitch embraced the old masters, Welles, Ford, and Hawks but there is without a doubt a French New Wave influence in his work.)
Crystal Clear Greeting Card Protection
Old Greeting Cards are very collectible ephemera – especially holiday and seasonal greeting cards. Sometimes they are collected as nostalgia, sometimes because of the quality or subject of the artwork and sometimes because of the period they were created. If you are a creator of greeting cards, we have acid-free supplies that will encourage the purchase as well as the saving and possibly framing of your work.
Comic Book Collection Protection Tips
We store comics to keep them valuable. Air pollution, ultra violet light, dirt and oil from fingers as well as rough handling all contribute to the deterioration of a comic. Storing a comic properly is essential to keeping it valuable. There are 3 major storage components to proper comic storage. They are a comic bag, a comic backing board and a comic box.

Use of these machines guarantees imbedded dirt removal, which equates to less record de-generation and better sound!
BBC said WHAT about Bowie?!
If you didn’t see the image of who the above statement is about would you ever think that the BBC could say such a thing ever about David Bowie? It makes you wonder if you can trust their opinion on anything. Besides David Bowie, this article is about film restoration. In the piece, she wrote for Hyperallergic, Carey Dunne tells us how this film, which is Bowie’s introduction to the world of his Ziggy Stardust persona, was nearly lost to deterioration from neglect. Not only film buffs can be affected by “lost films” it seems.

Attack of the Tacky Postcards!
What's so wonderful about a photograph is that looking at it, unless you were there, it will always be out of context, something new to feast your eyes on. Images can transport us to different decades, lifestyles and experiences. We can go to Paris and see the Eiffel Tower, pin up our favorite celebrities and now we can go on this peculiar postcard road-trip. Bags Unlimited carries the right gear to protect this history, because like all images with time they will discolor and fade.

The “A” List – Past & Picks
Ratio variants, virgin variants, B covers, store exclusives, sketch covers, convention exclusives… we have SO many choices these days when it comes to comic book covers. For speculators and/or investors it can be a tricky thing to navigate - assessing the pre-orders and trying to guess which variant will be the scorching hot auction site seller. Sometimes incentives are a safe bet, other times they are a bomb. Most of us have been burned in that game. However, there have been quite a few books lately that have caught fire and stayed hot, that were actually just regular first printing “A” covers.
