Vintage Movie Posters at Rediscovered Books. A Case for the Classics: Singin’ in the Rain. Five classic film noir crime stories released on Blu-ray.

As the golden age of VHS was kind enough to rewind for the final hurrah, pre-recorded videotapes were as ubiquitous as grains of sand on a Florida beach. Local video rental shops were plentiful, although fewer in number with the advent of corporate monoliths such as Blockbuster Video, an establishment where if you wanted to take a film home for the night, literal walls lined with multiple copies of the latest releases awaited your selection.

Welcome back to my series of Collecting Basics where I break down the hobby of card collecting piece by piece. In Part 1, we broke down what base/common cards are. Part 2 we got deep into the confusing Sp’s and variations. In Part 3 we dove into what parallels are. Part 4 I showed off inserts. In Part 5 we looked at autographs and the different varieties that exist, and in Part 6 we took a glance at memorabilia cards and their differences.

As the seasons change, and more of us find ourselves spending time indoors, it's the perfect opportunity to explore new activities and declutter our homes. It’s been a long winter. Now spring has sprung. The seasonal change! And with this change comes the change in sports. Baseball is here! And being an older person, my thoughts go to the past and my younger day’s hobby, shared by so many others, collecting baseball cards and baseball photos.

In our quest to bring you the most accurate and applicable information concerning vinyl records, we reached out once again to Tom from Bop Shop Records. Tom has been in business since the very early 1980’s but has been working in the music and record industry since dirt. Well, maybe not dirt but a long time. Unless your paper is made from cotton rag – which is very rare due to its high cost, most of the paper that your posters are printed on are made from wood pulp. Mechanical pulping produces paper with the shortest fiber length and does not remove lignin from the wood which promotes acid hydrolysis* and causes paper deterioration over time. It’s easy to get so caught up in the process of accumulating things - after all, that’s the fun part! - that you lose sight of some of the important details that are part and parcel of maintaining a serious collection. In this post I want to cover some of the oft-neglected things that you should be doing to protect your investment and plan for the future of your collection. Some of these considerations were brought to mind recently, as in the last month both a colleague of mine, and a collector with whom I have done a good bit of business, passed away.

I remember once hearing film critic Roger Ebert lament that you know you’re in for a bad film when there is a row of star shots lined up at the bottom of a movie poster. Well…all of these films have that, but I can assure you that they’re not all that bad, even Ebert liked some of them. Cinema in the 1970s was going through a renaissance; embracing the styles and themes of the French New Wave and the auteur theory, (the director being the author of his work). Films were forgoing the old-school studio style of film making and the audience were loving it on pictures as diverse as EASY RIDER, THE GODFATHER, M*A*S*H, and THE LAST PICTURE SHOW (director Peter Bogdonavitch embraced the old masters, Welles, Ford, and Hawks but there is without a doubt a French New Wave influence in his work.)

What's so wonderful about a photograph is that looking at it, unless you were there, it will always be out of context, something new to feast your eyes on. Images can transport us to different decades, lifestyles and experiences. We can go to Paris and see the Eiffel Tower, pin up our favorite celebrities and now we can go on this peculiar postcard road-trip.
